post School Board moves public comments to the end

January 8th, 2007

Filed under: School Board — Bob @ 11:22 pm

Greeley District 6 School board has decided to put public comments off until the end of their meetings.

The board claims the move was made to help complete actual agenda items, but some attendants claim the change restricts public commentary.

Regular speaker Conny Jensen is quoted as saying:

They did it to thwart us. The people showing up all the time, they’ve pretty much called us the main group.”

The School Board claims to not have a problem with comments, but is concerned that a small number of people are continually commenting at their meetings. They would like to have commentary from a larger representation of the public.

School Board meeting is tonight, Jan 8, at the district’s administration center, 1025 9th Ave., Greeley.

post Minimum Wage

January 8th, 2007

Filed under: Economics — Bob @ 1:36 pm

Colorado voters decided to raise the minimum wage in 2006 and this increase took effect January 1.

The Tribune has an interesting article on the impact this change has on two local restaurants.

Minimum wage increase laws are passed on the premise that an increase will give workers at that level a better quality of life. The dark side of a minimum wage increase is that some workers will lose their jobs as businesses cannot meet the new payroll requirements and are forced to lay off workers. Nine such individuals have lost their jobs at Greeley’s Goodberry’s Restaurant, 2400 17th St.

If you live in the Northern Colorado area and have been impacted by the minimum wage increase, positively or negatively, I would welcome your comments. I would be very interested to see what a minimum wage worker would have to say about this topic.

post 1/2 Million Dollar sign done

January 4th, 2007

Filed under: Greeley City Council — Bob @ 4:26 pm

After months (or at least what seemed like months) of work the new Greeley sign out at the U.S. 34 Bypass and U.S. 34 Business (10th Street) interchange is complete. Price tag, a cool $535,000.

Now all of those commuters to Ft. Morgan, Brush, Akron and Sterling will know when they get to Greeley.

Now the only question is, how long before somebody vandalizes it (and how much with the sandblasting cost)?
